Volunteer Testimonials

I’ve been a Board of Trustees member of the Boys & Girls Clubs for 8 years. During the last three years, I have served as a coach of the Club Basketball team, the Sonics. The kids were one of the younger teams in the City League and lost more games than they won. While winning is important, we choose to stress sportsmanship and treating all involved with respect – fellow teammates, other teams, referees and, of course, one’s self. The kids shake hands with the referees and score keepers both before and after each game.

Last year, we lost our second game in the playoffs and were really disappointed; however, a referee who had worked a couple of our games throughout the year came up to us and said, "Your team is in a league of their own." Still feeling the sting of the loss, we asked "In what way?” His answer surprised us: "In terms of sportsmanship."

There are several life lessons that are learned along the way in sports and we do our best to teach those in a positive manner. Three years ago we started with one team, and the sports program has expanded rapidly since. We now have flag football, soccer, baseball and, of course, basketball teams. For many of our kids, being on a team at the Boys & Girls Club is their only chance to participate in organized sports.

We are constantly looking for people interested in coaching and making a POSITIVE impact on a child´s life. If you’re up for this challenge, let us know.

As a father, I think it is very important to provide a safe and supportive environment for children. My first experience with Boys & Girls Clubs came while I was playing football for the Kansas City Chiefs. I volunteered extensively with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Eastern Jackson serving as honorary board member and helping to raise awareness of the Clubs through public appearances and spearheading special events. Now, through my continued involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve, I know Club staff and volunteers are dedicated to providing a safe place for at-risk kids to go to have fun and participate in life-changing programs. Boys & Girls Clubs are truly the positive place for kids!

This year, after a lot of hard work and many generous donations – The Boys & Girls Club moved to their new, beautiful building on Jonathan Avenue. What a blessing!

This new building allows us to serve more kids and their families.

Every Tuesday I get to see all my wonderful kids. I help out with home-work, play games, and help to clean up. My favorite part of the day is right before snack when each child gets a big hug from me. I have been known to bring in candy on occasion, handing out an extra piece to those I see being kind, polite or sharing.

The Boys & Girls Club Staff is fantastic! I have really enjoyed getting to know them over the years. The club is lucky to have them.

The bottom line is I love all the children and am happy to be helping create “a positive place for kids”.

-Miss Mary, Tuesday Volunteer

I enjoy being a part of the Boys & Girls Clubs because we keep kids going in the right direction. My involvement with the kids keeps me focused because I know they see me as a role model, and I don’t want to let them down. My son is a member of the Club, and it adds to my sense of wanting to set a good example. I learn from the Clubs too; the programs we run are full of life lessons valuable for kids and adults alike!
